Your Online Presence & Marketing

1. A Professional Website

It’s never been easier to create a professional website. Having an online home as an author is an absolute must. Even if you haven’t published your first book yet, it’s a great idea to start building your site early. Also, unless you have a very good reason for it, I would not recommend choosing your domain name (the name of your site – for example bettinamelher.com) as your book or series title. Use your author name (whether that’s your real name or a pen name). Keep it simple and make it easy for people to find you.

Haven’t you heard? Podcasts are AMAZING!

Do you listen to podcasts? If you don’t, you really should.

In this post I’ll explain why, but first, let’s find out what exactly a podcast is.

“A podcast is a digital audio file made available on the Internet for downloading to a computer or mobile device, typically available as a series, new installments of which can be received by subscribers automatically.”

There are podcasts on a wide variety of topics, and for indie authors they are an invaluable resource. Podcasts will enrich your life in ways you can’t imagine. The writer’s life can be a solitary one, so I found it incredibly helpful to actually hear other writers talk about their experiences, their struggles, and their successes. Not only are podcasts a great way of learning from influencers, experts, and like-minded people, but the fact that podcasts can be listened to pretty much anywhere makes it incredibly easy for us to incorporate them into our lives.

According to research studies, we check our phones anywhere from 60 to over 150 times per day. While this obsession may not be healthy, our phones have made life so much easier in many ways. No longer are phones only used for calls and text messages—we go on social media, take photos, record videos, access the internet, send and receive emails, listen to music, read the news, read books, watch TV, order food, and so much more. It’s incredible how far technology has come in such a short time.

Our phones play a big part in our everyday lives, and especially for writers, I believe our phones are extremely powerful tools…secret weapons, in fact. Continue reading “Your Smartphone – Your Secret Weapon”

5 Lessons Learned From Building My New Website

Persistence is key

When it came to customizing my site, I knew exactly what I wanted but I had no idea how to actually make that happen. I was clueless. Instead of accepting what I thought was just the way the template was (the preset font styles or the size of the images, for example), I dug a little deeper. And after reading articles and watching several YouTube videos, I found out how I could change all these things myself. Lesson learned: Persistence is key. Don’t give up. If you search hard enough, you’ll find what you’re looking for. Continue reading “5 Lessons Learned From Building My New Website”

My new website and why I’ve decided to move away from Wix

Welcome to my new website! 🙂

I created my first website using Wix. I was immediately sold by how easy it was to create and customize my own site. Wix is fantastic in that regard. Customizing the pages is really as easy as simply copying and pasting text, dragging and dropping images, and within minutes you’ll have a functioning and professional site. No HTML, no coding, none of the complicated techy stuff that would have had me running for the hills.
